Let's Go Shopping

Let's Go Shopping!

Have you ever taken a trip to Costco, the supermarket or even Target?
Have you ever bought a pack of items like pencils, notebooks, t-shirts or socks?
Did you ever try to determine the cost of each item in the pack?
That is division!

Today in class we went shopping. The price for these spectacular classroom items was per pack. Consequently, we did not know the cost of each individual item?
How can we figure our the price of each item in the pack?

First, we took the items out of the bags and spread them out across the tables.

Then, we divided the amount of money equally for each item.

Then we counted the amount of money for each item! That told us the cost of each item.

In some cases we had to work around a challenge. Some items had to be paid for with a mix of $5 and $1 bills. We quickly realized that it is best to divide up the larger bills first.

Here is a real life example that illustrates how important division is.
Kimia is obsessed with the movie Frozen. When she went to Target with her brother, she was ecstatic to see a pack of Elsa themed notebooks that would be perfect for her goody bags.

Kimia found  a pack of 4 glistening notebooks costing a total of $12. She quickly grabbed them from the shelf and pleased her brother to purchase them for her. Kiano curiously asked her how much each notebook would cost.
Can you help Kimia find the cost for each individual notebook?

Write a story problem as a comment. Tell us where, when and what you were purchasing in a pack. How much did the entire pack cost? How many items were in each pack?

Ask a friend to solve your problem! Be sure to write expanded sentences using adjectives or even adverbs!

    1. Hello Sophia!
The answer to your first question is $6.00.

The answer to your second question is $9.00.
All together, Jordyn and Abril spent $15.00.

Can you solve the answer to my question?
Kimia and Breaden went to the beach ball store because it was a sunny day and perfect wether to go to the beach. Kimia bought 9 packs of pink beach balls. Each pack of pink beach balls cost $36. Breaden bought 8 packs of blue beach balls. Each pack of blue beach balls cost $56. How much did Breaden and Kimia spend in all? Here is a challenge, if they pay with a $50 bill, how much money do they get in change?
      Good luck!
      From your challenging friend,
      Zoe

    1. Dear Tyler,
      I found the answer.
      It is $10 dollars.
      That problem was easy.
      Here is a harder problem.
Tyler and I went to a basketball game.
      They bought food and tickets.
All together they spent $56 dollars in all.
      Food cost $20 dollars.
How much did they spend on tickets.

      Sincerely,
      Oliver

    2. Dear Oliver,
That was also easy. The answer is $36 was spent on tickets. If you were to divide it by 2, the answer would be $18 per person on tickets.

      See you tomorrow.
      Tyler

  4. Dear Braden,
Can you figure out this story problem?
My family and I went to Costco and bought these things: We got 3 bags of Kirkland mixed up crackers with 63 crackers in each for 6 dollars. Then we bought 4 packs of 6 butters sticks in each pack for 12 dollars. Can you tell me the total, the cost of a single product, and the amount of the product in each pack/bag? Thanks if you do it!
    Sincerely,
    Judah

    1. Dear Judah,
Each bag of Kirkland mixed up crackers cost $2.00 and there are 63 crackers in each bag. Each pack of butter sticks cost $3.00 and there are 6 butter sticks in each pack. The total cost is $18.00. I hope this is correct.

      Sincerely,
      Braeden
