Subject and Predicate

This week we have been identifying, or finding, parts of a sentence. We learned that each sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject tells who or what the sentence is mostly about. The predicate tells what the subject is, has or what it is doing.

Here is an example.

Sophia had a wonderful day at soccer practice.
The subject is "Sophia". The predicate is "had a wonderful day at soccer practice."

Watch this video for a fun song about subjects and predicates.

Try writing a super sentence and ask a friend to identify the subject and predicate. Be sure to check back so you can see if your friend responded!
Check the example above for how to format your comment.

    2. Dear Zoe,
What a marvelous sentence! The complete subject is "My brother, sister, and mom" the complete predicate is "helped decorate the birthday cake for my day". The verb or simple predicate is "helped". I accept your challenge!

I know people decorate cakes for birthdays, so I can infer it must be your dad's birthday!

What is the sequence for decorating a birthday cake? Can you use our sequencing skills to give me a quick "How To" ?

      Love,
      Mrs. B

    3. Dear Mrs. Broussard,
I accept your challenge. Here is a ‘’How to’’ on making birthday cakes in sequence.
      1. First, you buy all of the following ingredients at a market.
Eggs, flour, cake batter, baking powder, baking soda, butter, sugar, and pam.
      2. Next, mix the ingredients together. For this, you mix the wet ingredients together, the dry ingredients together, and then both mixes together.
      3. Third, spray a large pan with pam, butter it up, put the mixed up ingredients in the pan, and put the pan in the oven.
      4. Then, when the cake is done, let it cool for about 10-25 minutes.
      5. Last, frost your cake, cover it with sprinkles, and add a cherry on top!
Have you ever backed a cake?
      Sincerely,
      Zoe
