What do responsible students do?

This week we talked a lot about the responsibilities of being a third grader in Room 9. In order to create a class pledge and determine our classroom rules we answered 4 important questions.

First, we shared why we thought school was important. Most of us said that school is important because it helps us learn.

I wanted to know why learning was so important. As a class we decided that learning helps us prepare for college or jobs, so we can make money. It teaches us how to make good friends, and discover our own talents. Most importantly it makes our lives better!

Next, I asked Room 9 to tell me what they hope to learn this year. After categorizing our answers we found 5 major themes.
1. Math - multiplication and division
2. Technology including blogging
3. How to become better writer's including writing in cursive
4. Science
5. How to improve our reading skills.

Since we all agreed that school is important and listed all of the things we are eager to learn, we needed to come up with some specific behaviors that will help us reach our goals.

We sorted our answers into categories and found that listening and being respectful were the most important. We also talked about our attitude toward our learning and our responsibilities as students. Once we put all of our ideas together we created our classroom pledge!

A few ways to show you are a responsible student is by the way you act on the carpet. Brutus and Tank helped me demonstrate some key behaviors.
Always raise your hand before speaking!

Stay in one place and don't distract other learners!

Keep your focus on your learning!

In your opinion, what is the most important thing you can do to be a responsible student? What are your personal strengths as a student and what do you think you need to work on?

  1. Dear Room 9,
I think there are many things you can do to be a responsible student. In my opinion, the most important thing is working well with others. I love working with my brother, Tank. We share, help each other problem solve, and listen to each others ideas. I think one of my strengths is that I am good at collaborating and working with a group of friends on class assignments. As you can see by the picture above, Tank and I love hanging out but we often get distracted. This is definitely a weakness. I think being PROACTIVE and choosing to sit away from Tank on the carpet would be a great way to make me an even more responsible student.
    Love,
    Brutus

  3. Dear Mrs. B and class,

The most important thing I can do to be a well behaved student is to follow directions, listen, and participate. My strengths are participating, following directions, and being aware of what the next task is that I need to do in class. A few things I need to work on are, listening, my typing skills, and a few things in math.

    Sincerely,
    Judah

  4. Dear Mrs. Broussard,
In my opinion the most important thing I can do to be a responsible student is to work hard. Working hard involves making good decisions, being proactive, believing in each other, and above all, LISTENING. I think my strengths as a student are collaborating with other students, enjoying learning, and working hard. I think I need to work on speaking nicely, behaving, and staying positive. When you were in third grade did you know you were going to be a teacher?

    From,
    Zoe

  5. Dear Mrs. Broussard,

In my opinion what I can do to be a responsible student is always follow directions, never get upset when I get something wrong and to never speak when another student is speaking. My personal strength is that I always help someone when they are upset, even if it's not someone I know. I would like to work on my reading because I want to learn about a lot of things.

    Love,
    Sophia N.

  7. Dear Mrs. Broussard,
To be a more responsible student I have to keep my stuff organized so I can get it easily. I need to remember to listen to the directions and pay attention in class and not talk to other people next to me. I do my best to always finish my work in class.

I really like the pictures of Brutus and Tank and I hope to meet them and they can play with my boxer Missi :)

  10. Dear the fine room nine

Hi my name is Nick I am in fourth grade. Mrs. Broussard is my friend and I am excited to be posting on her blog. I am a responsible because I make eye contact with the teacher when it is time to listen. It is good to do that because it helps you focus.

    from your friend,

  11. Dear Room 9,
To be a responsible student I need to work as hard as I can and do my best. I need to raise my hand. I need to wait for Mrs. B to finish her directions before I raise my hand. I also need to do my homework and turn it in. My personal strengths are math, working hard, doing all of my homework and also I do all my extra credit. I need to work on my spelling and writing and also reading. Mrs. B., what are your personal strengths and weaknesses as a teacher? Room 9, what do you all want to be when you grow up?

    1. Braeden,
What a fabulous comment and such a great question! I believe my strengths as a teacher are being kind, creative and silly. Some of my goals this year are to create and maintain our class blog, find study buddies for our class, and do more projects to help the community.
      Sincerely,
      Mrs. B
