Winter Solistice

Winter Solistice

The winter solstice occured on December 21, 2014,  at 3:03 (PST).

What is the winter solstice?
 Around December 21 or 22,
the sun's rays fall directly over the farthest point south of the equator.

This marks the first day of winter.
Winter days have fewer hours of daylight because of the path the earth takes as it revolves around the sun. The earth completely revolves around the sun during 365 days. The earth's axis always tips about 23 1/2 degrees from a line perpendicular to its path.
In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins in June.
Different regions have longer winters than others. For example, in the polar regions, winter takes up half the year. In the Temperate Zones winter takes up about one quarter of the year.

In regions where there is cold weather, it causes many changes in the environment. Water may freeze and become ice, snow, sleet or icicles.

Most plants and animals become dormant and rest. Some animals hibernateThe only plants that grow and remain green are evergreensPeople protect themselves from the cold climate with winter clothing when they go outdoors. They enjoy a variety of indoor activities or outdoor wintersports such as skiing, skating, or sledding.

  1. Dear Mrs. Broussard and class,

I have many things I adore about winter. First, I love to ski, but I think skiing is more enjoyable when there is more snow. Less snow, or more sun, causes it to be icy. When it’s icy it becomes very dangerous. I did ski this winter break. The snow was a million times better than last year, but still not terrific. It was my first time to really ski with poles! I did not stay up so late on New Years Eve, because I skied that day and was going to ski new years day. I also went ice-skating at an outside AND inside ice skating rink. As you can see, I had a blast over winter break.

  2. D D Dear r r room 9,

I don't know why I'm stuttering, sorry. :) Anyways, the part I most enjoyed about winter break was attending a huge Bar Mitzvah, an ecstatic Hanukah party, and a great New Year's party.
The activity I participated in was a hockey tournament. The one thing that wasn't the best was the weather - it was really cold. I was even shivering.

  3. Dear room 9,

I did a lot of activities this break. The first thing I did was skating. Skating was extremely fun. I went to skate with my brother and dad and it was like boys night out.The second activity I took part in was sledding at Lake Arrowhead. Finally, the last main activity I took part in was skiing at Snow Valley. It was really cold and it snowed while we skied, I even felt like I got frost bite. All of these activities over winter break were very fun and I wish to try all of them again sometime soon.

Did you ever go to Lake Arrowhead?

  4. Dear Class,

I enjoyed some winter activities over the break. I went to the Dana Point Harbor with my Grandparents and my whole family. The Harbor put on a special event called "IlluminOcean. " It was super fun to walk through the Harbor and see all the sea sculptures and wear special glasses that make the lights look like dolphins frolicking in the sea.

I also enjoyed Ice Skating with Blythe and my Dad.

Overall, I had a swell winter break.

    Cheers,

    Teddi
