Si Può Parlare Italiano?

This week's story, The Mysterious Giant of Barletta takes place in Barletta, Italy.
The town of Barletta currently has a
population of about 90,000.

The statue, Colossus of Barletta, measures around 16 feet and 7 inches.

Can you find any other facts about the statue?

One thing we adored about the story written by Tomie dePaola is it includes many Italian phrases. Not only were we able to learn about the giant statue, but we also improved our Italian!

Some include:
Buona notte which means good night,
Grazi meaning thank you,
and Bella meaning beautiful.

    1. Raana,
Can you tell me the population of Italy today? Is that more or less than the population of California? How about of the United States? Io sono curioso, I am curious, what the difference is?

      Ciao,

  4. Ciao Room 9,
Sei stato a Italia? Have you ever visited Italy?
I traveled to Italy once when I was 10 years old. I can't remember too many details of the trip. However, one thing that stands out in my memory is enjoying the delicious food. I can still taste the savory pasta in my mouth.
Did you know that the modern word "macaroni" comes from the Italian word for kneading dough? Also, they are over 350 varieties of pasta shapes today!
Ti piace mangiare la pasta? Do you like to eat pasta?

    arrivederci,
    Mrs. Broussard

  6. Saluti Room9!

The Colossus of Barletta is a statute made of Bronze from the Early Middle Ages. Qual è il tuo punto di riferimento preferito in Italia? Mine is The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Did you know that the Leaning Tower of Pisa leans because it was built on unsturdy soil? Also, Italians are very proud because Italy is shaped like a stivale. I non sono mai stato in Italia, have you?

  8. Ciao stanza 9!
I am very excited to be learning Italian! Here are some fun facts about Italy: Italy is shaped like a huge boot. Italy has two groups of big, rocky, mountains called the Alps and the Apennies. Most Italian folks live in apartments and others in single- family houses. Pasta is one of the most common foods in Italy. The main course of the meal could be meat or fish. Pizza is also a very popular snack. What is your favorite Italian food? Mine is pizza. I could eat pizza every day!( I think I would start to get bored of pizza by then!) Can you translate this sentence?
    Good Luck or buona fortuna!!
Penso che Tomie DePola fatto un ottimo lavoro di scrittura del libro “ll Gignte di Barletta”. Fai?
    Your hungry for pizza friend,
    Sophia S.

  9. Caro stanza 9,
Two years ago my family and I flew to Germany. Then from Dusseldorf we drove to Genoa in Italy. We stayed in Genoa for one day and we took a cruise and went to the capital of Italy Rome! we had to scurry off the cruise and get a tour guide to show us around because we only had one day to see Rome. He took us to a great restaurant. We had an amazing pasta and pizza. I still have that yummy taste in my mouth.

If you went to Italy where would you like to go?

    Calorosamente,

  10. Caro stanza 9,

I think the Colossus of Barletta is very cool. The statue is made up of bronze and is around 16 feet, 7 inches tall. It was built for a Eastern Roman Emperor. The statue is located in Barletta, Italy. When I get older I want to visit this statue and take pictures with my familly. Vuoi visitare questa statua ? I also want to visit Colosseum, I think it is really unique because it is like the old Staples Center. Qual è il tuo posto preferito in Italia ?

  11. Caro Aula 9,

I enjoyed reading the story of Barletta today in class. It took place in Italy where they speak the Italian language. Here is a description of the story below, translated to Italian:

La storia di Barletta era circa il gigante di Barletta salvare il loro paese da un esercito. Mi è piaciuto leggere questa storia. La storia si è conclusa felicemente e ciò che rimane è una statua per ricordare il gigante di Barletta.

    Grazie,
    Massima
