Blogging is a great way to practice and improve our

writing skills. One way to refine your writing and

blogging comments is to use compound sentences.

What is a compound sentence?

1. A sentence that combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
2. It joins the two sentences with a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
3. The comma goes BEFORE the conjunction.

Here are some sample compound sentences, and they
 are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in
November, and many families gather for a traditional
 feast.

In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth,
Massachusetts, but they had really planned a trip to
Virginia.

The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and
harsh, so everyone had to work together to survive.

The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling
Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their
first feast.

Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home,
or they make a reservation at a local restaurant.

As Thanksgiving break approaches, tell us

 about your
plans. What are some thing that you

learned about Thanksgiving?
Be sure to include at least two

COMPOUND SENTENCES.

  1. Dear Room 9,

In the past few years we had a small Thanksgiving dinner with just my Grandparents, but this year we will have a feast with all my cousins, aunts and uncles.

    Sincerely,

    Teddi

  2. Dear Mrs. Broussard,

I am celebrating thanksgiving with my family friends, since we can't visit our New Jersey family this year. Thanksgiving is important because it is the time when we think about everything we have, and we appreciate it.

    Love,
    Sophia N.

  3. Dear Mrs. Broussard and Room 9,

My plans for Thanksgiving this year may not sound exciting, but it is a tradition that is really fun. The tradition is I go to my Auntie Ronda’s house, my whole family meets together, eats turkey, and dances to music from the jukebox.

I know the Pilgrims planed to land in Virginia, but bad weather turned the ship off coarse, and they ended up in Plymouth which is in what we call Massachusetts right now. I am inferring that since Pilgrims did not have an oven, they probably used a bonfire. What were the Native Americans that helped the Pilgrims called? Here is a hint: It is in the brain pop video.

From your friend that really, really wants turkey and gravy,
    Zoe
